Tax incentives for HMRC staff

You may have read press reports at the start of the year that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) staff are being offered bonuses if they collect more tax from businesses and individuals. In the past, many people have suspected that tax inspectors’ pay was based on the yield from tax investigations but HMRC always denied it.

It is unclear whether the bonuses will have any effect on the number of enquiries or how they are carried out. But you can rest assured that we will object to any unreasonable HMRC requests and apply for investigations to be closed down where this is in your best interests.

Where there is justification for an enquiry we will, as now, deal with it as efficiently as possible so as to minimise costs and disruption to your business or personal affairs.
